The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA 1987) required states to initiate and maintain Nurse Aide Training, Competency Evaluation Test and Nurse Aide Registries to define training and evaluation standards for nurse aides who work in long term care units, hospitals and health care centers.
In the United States Certified Nursing assistant can be defined as a person, who have completed State approved training programs and assists patients with health care needs, offers bedside care and follows nursing procedures under the active supervision of License Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse. •    Assist the patients who are bed ridden, by helping them to turn and move to prevent them from bedsores.
•    Help to feed patients, who are unable to feed on their own.
•    Provide assistance to patients to move in and out of the bed, help them in their exercises and walking.
•    Keep constant vigil on patient by observing their condition, maintain record of their food and liquid intake, measure their pulse beating etc. They also report the changes in their daily habit to changing or next shift professional.
•    They also take care of the dressings.
•    Get ready the patient for treatment, surgery or physical examination.
•    Move patients to different treatment units with the help of stretcher or wheelchair.
•    Change the linen of the bed and clean the rooms.
•    Administer injections, medications, glucose bottles and nursing wounds of the patients.
